Union Case Thrown Out
A union backed equal pay case has been thrown out by the Employment Appeal Tribunal (EAT) in Edinburgh - no doubt to the anger of the Unison members involved.
The hearing revolved around the initial grievance registered on behalf of Unison members in South Ayrshire Council.
The EAT ultimately ruled that the union had not followed the required procedures and regulations - and that the information they did provide was insufficient.
So the judge ruled that the case - South Ayrshire Council v Ms Caroline Aitchison and Others - should be decided in the council's favour.
Now this will come as a great shock - no doubt - to the union members involved.
Will they be compensated by Unison - if their cases cannot continue and if so, how will their interests be represented?
The decision also comes as a timely health warning - about what the unions say, then actually do - in relation to equal pay.
If any readers are interested I can pass on a copy of the decision - by e-mail and on request to: markirvine@compuserve.com
