Somebody Up There

Alex Salmond's political opponents could be forgiven for shrugging their shoulders today and concluding that - 'Somebody up there really does like him'.

Because no sooner does the SNP leader get the news - that many Labour voters actually regard him as their first choice for First Minister - in preference to Iain Gray.

Than an outgoing Liberal Democrat MSP - John Farquhar Munro - comes out publicly and declares that Alex Salmond is undoubtedly - 'the best man for the job'.

In fact John Farquhar Munro went much further that that - the MSP for the Highlands for the past 12 years gave Alex Salmond a glowing personal endorsement - the day before the Lib Dems launch their election manifesto.

Speaking to the BBC Scotland, JFM said of Alex Salmond:

"I think he's done an excellent job in the last session of parliament and I'm quite happy to support him for a second term. I think he's the most appropriate person we've got in the Scottish Parliament at the present time to undertake that job."

So from out of the blue - Alex Salmond and the SNP receive another unexpected boost - and from the most surprising of sources.

Maybe the SNP leader is making his own luck.

But as Napoleon Bonaparte is reputed to have said - "Give me lucky men for my Generals, I can teach them everything else".
