Interesting Career
In recent days, South Lanarkshire Labour MP - Tom Greatrex - has been in the news.
First of all for riding to the rescue of former PM and fellow Labour MP Gordon Brown - then for demanding that the Scottish government comes clean over freedom of information.
See previous posts dated 1 April - 'Moonlighting MPs' and 2 April 2011 - 'Freedom of Information'.
MP for Rutherglen and Hamilton West, is regarded as a dynamic young politician who was behind Labour's strategy that saw off the SNP in last year's general election.
So I did a little research which shows that MP for Rutherglen and Hamilton West - part of the South Lanarkshire Council area - was a GMB official in 1999 and worked for the union for five years.
So he must be pretty familiar with bonus schemes and equal pay - I would say.
Tom who hails from Ashford in Kent then moved to Scotland in 2004 - taking up a job as a Chief Officer at East Dunbartonshire Council - before moving on to a new role as as Director of Corporate affairs for NHS 24 between 2006 and 2007.
Now that's what I call an interesting career move - from GMB full-time official to Chief Officer in one of Scotland's local councils.
I bet Tom has some interesting stories to tell.
If any readers from Rutherglen and Hamilton West bump into him - be sure to ask Tom what he thinks about South Lanarkshire Council, Freedom of Information and - of course - equal pay.
