Glasgow City Council

An important tribunal hearing involving Glasgow City Council got underway this week.

A group of women have challenged the council's voluntary severance scheme - which the council announced last year.

The scheme was originally open to all council employees - but that changed as some groups were subsequently excluded - for reasons that are still unclear.

The women believe the council scheme is unfair and discriminatory.

What's the rationale for allowing senior officials to leave the service - with an enhanced pension package often - if the lower paid workers in front-line services are treated so very differently?

Well the answer to that question lies with the employment tribunal in Glasgow - which is considering the case all this week.
