Working the System

Jermaine Jackson - older brother of the famously weird Michael Jackson reveals in his new book - that the Jackson family had plans to spirit 'Wacko' out of the country on a private jet - if his trial on child molestation charges had resulted in the singer being found guilty.

Apparently Wacko Jacko would have sought refuge in the middle eastern country of Bahrain - a Never Never land for many equality issues it has to be said - because Bahrian of course does not have an extradition treaty with America.

So there you have it - one of the most famous families in America would have cheerfully gone along with the rule of law - until the judicial process delivered the 'wrong' result - in which case they would have cried foul and spirited the Prince of Pop away.

I suppose they're not alone - plenty of people fight tooth and nail through the courts - working the system endlessly and relentlessly until they reach journey's end - then say that they don't agree with the outcome and that the system stinks after all.

Similar tactics are being used over the travellers' site at Dale farm in Essex - which has been fought through the courts for years - but having lost the legal battle the travellers say they are staying put anyway.

Which makes a mockery of the legal system of course - but just like the Jackson Family - 'What do they care?'

Reports at the weekend suggested that the travellers would leave - if they were offered £6 million in compensation - for building permanent homes in a 'green belt' area without planning permission.

My view is that you can't have your cake and eat it - if you're going to start playing by the rules - then you need to accept the final outcome - otherwise people are just working the system.

In other words you can't - or at least you shouldn't - have it both ways.
