No Excuses

'It never rains but it pours' - is a well known saying in Scotland for reasons that don't need explaining - for anyone familiar with the Scottish weather at least.

And that sentiment will ring especially true for Labour in Glasgow at the moment - with the news that a senior councillor - Shaukat Butt MBE - has been bailed from court after being charged with assaulting his wife.

Shaukat Butt MBE represents Labour in the city's Govan ward - and he appeared in court last week - having been arrested and detained in custody.

Labour moved quickly to suspend the councillor.

But it's his wife's courage you've got to admire - for not putting up with this behaviour and insisting on pressing charges.

The Herald reported the other day - without a trace of irony - that Shaukat Butt is currently the vice-chair of Glasgow Community and Safety Services - and quoted him as saying last year:

“Violence and crime can have a devastating impact on our communities.”

Exactly - and that's why there are no excuses.

And why men who behave violently towards women should be treated very severely by the courts.
