You Heard It Here First!

No sooner have I suggested One Member One Vote (OMOV) as the obvious and democratic solution to Labour's leadership problems in Scotland - than a Glasgow MP follows suit.

The Herald reports today that Tom Harris - Labour MP for Glasgow South - has declared that he will not in the election of the Scottish Labour Party’s new leader in the Scottish Parliament.

Good for him - maybe others will take a stand as well.

In the Herald article Tom Harris goes on to say that Labour's electoral college should be replaced - by a one member, one vote election - with MPs, MSPs and trade unions taking a back seat.

Tom Harris makes the obvious point that this would not disenfranchise him - or any other MP or MSP - because they would all still be entitled to vote as an ordinary party member.

Precisely - it's called democracy in other walks of life.

What kind of electoral system allows MPs and MSPs a greater voice - a weighted vote - in selecting the Labour leader? - I hear you say.

Well the one that handed the crown to Ed Miliband of course.

The reality is that One Member One Vote - is the only game in town for a modern, democratic party.

And if Labour doesn't show courage by biting the bullet this time - it will continue to be punished  by the Scottish voters.
