Summary Justice
For reasons known best to himself, the Archbishop of Canterbury - Dr Rowan Williams - has shared his thoughts about the killing of the notorious al-Quaeda leader - Osama bin Laden.
When asked about the death during a press briefing on Thursday, Dr Williams said:
"I think the killing of an unarmed man is always going to leave a very uncomfortable feeling because it doesn't look as if justice is seen to be done."
Now I'm sure that the archbishop means well.
But he is talking through a hole in his head - because this was a man who helped plan the murder of thousands of innocent civilians right across the world - in the most appalling circumstances.
Whose henchmen have taken a sadistic delight in beheading foreign 'infidels' - while filming the scene live in real time and posting their foul deeds on the Internet - as an encouragement for others to do the same.
So maybe President Obama having located the world's greatest terrorist - living right under the noses of the Pakistani authorities - should have asked if he would mind popping down to the local nick to answer a few questions.
But it seems a tad unlikely that Bin Laden would have co-operated with such a request - no matter how politely it was put.
So sending in the navy SEALs to dispense summary justice - if necessary - seemed like the right response in all the circumstances.
