People Power

A debate is taking place in the Westminster Parliament later today - because of an e-petition which has gathered support from 139,000 people.

Under an initiative introduced by the present coalition government - any public petition which attracts the support of 100,000 people has to be considered by the UK parliament and MPs.

The subject is the Hillsborough Disaster in 1989 - in which 96 Liverpool fans died when they were out for the day with their friends day - to a football match.

An inquiry has been underway for some times and an Independent Panel is due to report its findings in 2012.

But the families of those who died want immediate access to various official documents - which the government has already released to the inquiry panel.

The government has said it is committed to full public disclosure - so the issue is about when and not if the documents will be released.

In the immediate aftermath of Hillsborough - Liverpool fans were blamed for the disaster - though a subsequent inquiry turned this finding on its head - and criticised the actions of the police.

I hope the families of the victims get some closure soon - because more than twenty years on Hillsborough is still an open wound.l
