Fantastic Mr Fox
The Fantastic Mr Fox has finally bowed to the inevitable - and resigned his position as defence secretary.
Which just goes to prove that highly intelligent people - are also capable of doing very stupid things.
In the case of Liam Fox he failed to see what most other sensible people could see - which is that his working relationship with a close friend - Adam Werritty - was entirely inappropriate.
The BBC reports that in his resignation letter to the Prime Minister - David Cameron - the defence secretary admits that he had "mistakenly allowed" his personal and professional responsibilities to become "blurred".
So the Prime Minister concluded that he had to resign - which is the correct decision in all the circumstances.
Mr Fox's resignation letter went on to say:
"I now have to hold myself to my own standard. I have therefore decided, with great sadness, to resign from my post as secretary of state for defence."
What puzzles me is why such clever people get themselves into such a mess - in the first place.
Having spent years climbing up the greasy pole of politics - some people just insist on pressing the self-destruct button - when they finally get to the top.
Sad really, but he should have gone days ago - because his fantastically tall tale just didn't add up.
