North Lanarkshire Press

The Kilsyth Chronicle has published a front page story on the fight for equal pay in North Lanarkshire which is good news because the more information that's in the public domain the better if you ask me.

Apparently an extended version of this article will appear next week in The Cumbernauld News as well.

The Council's comments do not address the recent developments in the Employment Tribunals and readers will note that local people can join the public debate at the Cumbernauld News web site.

COUNCIL EQUAL PAY BATTLE

North Lanarkshire Council being pursued for back
pay worth tens of millions of pounds.

One council employee who contacted the News and Chronicle wishes to remain anonymous. The worker said: “A lot of people, for example classroom assistants and home support workers, who were assessed as long ago as2001 as deserving the same pay rate as other workers such as bin men. We are still waiting for this to happen. We are currently being paid around £8 an hour while bin men get around £12 an hour.”

Campaign organisation Action 4 Equality Scotland is helping these staff pursue an industrial tribunal, and MSPs including Jamie Hepburn have also agreed to back the claims.

A spokesperson for North Lanarkshire Council said: “To date we have settled or made offers to settle thousands of claims and agreements totalling more than £30 million and will continue to take a view which balances protecting the council and settling claims where we believe such action is justified.”

This is a hot topic online with many readers commenting
