Barmy Army

The Guardian reports, via the Press Association, that no sooner has a UKIP fruitcake been elected as a local councillor than he has been sacked within a few days for bringing the party into disrepute.

Now I don't admire anything about UKIP, but they seemed to have bundled this chap out the door without drawing breath since the elections took place last Thursday.

So what kind of hearing took place, what response did Dave Small (who is still a councillor thanks to UKIP) make to these charges and who made the decision to show him the door?

I think these are important questions for a democratic party to answer, particularly one that is now in receipt of so much public money.

Ukip has sacked one of its newly-elected councillors days after sweeping to big gains in the local elections amid claims that he posted racist and homophobic remarks on social media.

Dave Small was elected to Redditch borough council, Worcestershire in last week's poll. A Ukip spokesman said: "He has now been expelled for clearly bringing the party into disrepute."

It was reported at the weekend that, in February 2013, Small referred to gay people as "perverts" and expressed opposition to "poofs and dykes" being allowed to marry. And he predicted that "thousands more scroungers" would soon arrive in the UK from Mali as a result of a range of government policies.

Small, who won his seat in the Church Hill ward topping the poll with 665 votes, also complained in a November 2012 post that he was not allowed to use the term "Paki".

In June that year, he wrote: "I visiting the city of Birmingham recently and felt like a foreigner in the city of my birth, all around me I could hear the sound of jabbering in an alien voice... we also have the Pakistani's and the Somali's. Tell me Mr Cameron Why? the men wear their Pyjamas."

Small won his seat in the Church Hill ward, topping the poll with 665 votes.
