Single Status in South Lanarkshire
A regular reader from South Lanarkshire has been in touch - with an intriguing enquiry.
The reader says that when she and other women council employees were moved from weekly to fortnightly pay in 2002/03 - they received no payment or 'incentive' from South Lanarkshire Council - for agreeing to this change.
Yet - the readers says - that the weekly paid male workers who were moved over to fortnightly pay did receive an incentive payment from South Lanarkshire Council - a one-off payment of £500 apparently.
"How come?" - the reader asks, not unreasonably.
Well I don't know - but this seems very odd indeed.
Because if the claim is correct - then it would be a clear example of male workers within South Lanarkshire Council being treated more favourably - than their women colleagues.
Not only that - it wouldn't make economic sense either - because there were far more weekly paid women workers in the council at that time - by a ratio of 2 to 1.
So moving the weekly paid women over to fortnightly pay must have saved the council much more money - than moving a much smaller number of men.
If you can shed any light on what happened over the move to fortnightly pay - and any differences in the treatment of male and female council workers - then drop me a note at: markirvine@compuserve.com
Maybe South Lanarkshire Council itself - can help explain the situation - maybe things are not as they first appear.
If so, I'd be happy to share the details on the blog site.
