More Bonus Balls

The latest edition of Private Eye does a greatjob in exposing the hypocrisy in the press - for saying one thing - yet doing another over big bonus payments.

"Ban bonuses," Simon Jenkins wrote in the Guardian last week.

"They are mad. Discretionary gifts to top executives from company funds should be considered a malpractice," - the Guardian columnist went on

The article goes on to highlight an example of a bonus culture in easyJet - and allows the company founder - Sir Stelios - to rail against a big bonus of £840,000 which was paid to its chief executive.

Yet the Eye goes on to point out that the chief executive of the Guardian Media Group - Carolyn McCall - took a £143,000 bonus for achieving 'personal objectives' in 2010.

Despite announcing a record £171 million loss.

Yes it's not just the bankers - and it's not just bonuses - which amount to money for old rope in many areas of public and private life.

Although veteran Guardian journalists may feel a lot more secure in their comfortable jobs - by conveniently failing point the double standards involved.

Stephen Hester - eat your heart out.
