Old Petrolhead

I missed all the furore about Jeremy Clarkson and his recent comments on the BBC - where he said something along the lines of - 'public sector workers should all be shot for going on strike over their pensions'.

Now I take anything that the nation's favourite petrolhead says with a great big pinch of salt - which I'm sure most people do.

Because he deliberately goes out of his way to be provocative and offensive - and he often spoils a good argument or thought - by going way, way over the top.

But that's what he's all about - it's his leitmotif, his modus operandi - he can't change it any more than a leopard can change its spots.

Neither can Frankie Boyle I imagine - yet we don't get campaigns for him to be taken off air - just because he goes a bit too far occasionally.

Or if we do then I wouldn't support such a po-faced response - it's equally disagreeable - just from a different standpoint.

I read somewhere that Unison was taking legal advice - about instigating possible criminal  charges against Clarkson for his comments - as if they were meant to be taken literally and swallowed whole.

If so, it will be the biggest waste of money in trade union history - just a pity they didn't show similar enthusiasm for the courts - when it came to fighting for equal pay!

No, if I were in charge of Unison I'd invite Jeremy down to meet some of the people who went on strike - to a picket line and brazier preferably.

I doubt very much it would lead to a meeting of minds but at least there'd be some good publicity - for both sides.

As it happens - with the Christmas sales fast approaching - the Old Petrolhead is the only one who will be laughing - all the way to the bank.
