Mince Pies and Mulled Wine

I think that the shadow chancellor - Labour's Ed Balls - must have been indulging in the festive spirit - a bit too early this year.

Perhaps a few too many mulled wines and mince pies - as they say - because he's given a rather strange interview in The Independent today - in which he calls for the Lib Dems to leave the 'coalition' - and join a new government with Labour.

Ed goes on to make the case for Labour's message to the voters - to become a bit more believable in the New Year - witness the following quotes:

"Rightly or wrongly, there is public scepticism about Labour's willingness to take tough decisions on public spending. A big part of my task is to turn that round and win that argument."

"The public have got to be persuaded for the future that we would run the economy and control public spending in a tough and disciplined way. We have got work to do to win that argument... The deficit has got to come down. There have got to be cuts".

So there we have it - the new policy platform is 'nicer cuts under Labour' - maybe even ones that don't hurt anybody - or tackle anyone's vested interests.

Now I might support that if I knew what it meant - but I don't - so I can't.

All we have is the evidence of our own eyes - where the Labour party can't even come out and make stand against final salary pension schemes - which as everyone knows penalise the low paid - and benefit only the better off.

With leadership like that - no wonder the voters are struggling to understand what the Labour party stands for - these days.
