Bananas

A number of readers have been in touch about the voting shambles to elect Labour's new Scottish leader - Johann Lamont.

As regular readers know Ken Macintosh won the backing of most ordinary Labour party members - but came second because he got fewer votes from MSPs and MPs - and the trade unions.

So here's a breakdown of the voting figures again - expressed first of all as a share of the 1/3rd, 1/3rd, 1/3rd electoral college - and then as a percentage share of the 100% vote in each individual section.

Voting by Individual Labour Party Members

Tom Harris - 3.444%
Johann Lamont - 12.183%
Ken Macintosh - 17.707%

Total - 33.33%

Tom Harris - 10%
Joahann Lamont - 37%
Ken Macintosh - 53%

Total - 100%

Voting by MSPs and MPs

Tom Harris - 1.778%
Johann Lamont - 17.778%
Ken Macintosh - 13.7778%

Total - 33.33%

Tom Harris - 5.3%
Joahann Lamont - 53.4%
Ken Macintosh - 41.3%

Total - 100%

Voting by Trade Unions

Tom Harris - 2.730%
Johann Lamont - 21.807%
Ken Macintosh - 8.797%

Total - 33.33%

Tom Harris - 8.2%
Joahann Lamont - 65.4%
Ken Macintosh - 26.4%

Total - 100%

Even if you combine the votes from the first two sections Ken Macintosh still comes out on top - with 47% of the vote compared to only 44% for Johann Lamont - without redistributing the voes of Tom Harris who came third.

So the upshot is that Johann Lamont owes her 'victory' to the trade unions - who balloted over 300,000 members - allegedly.

But with less than 20,000 members in the whole of the Scottish Labour party - it stands to reason that most of the people balloted by the trade unions - were not Labour party members.

Now how crazy is that?

As someone once said - 'If that's democracy, then I'm a banana!'
