God's Work

I was listening to a radio programme on BBC Scotland earlier today - which discussed the 'role' that God plays in sport.

My first reaction was that people at the BBC were wasting money our again - or taking mind altering substances - or both.

Because how could you possibly conduct such a ridiculous discussion?

My worst fears came true when one of the presenters held up Eric Liddell - of Chariots of Fire Fame - as an example of how God intervenes to bring some athletes success - yet not others.

Eric Liddell - dubbed the Flying Scotsman - was also a devout Christian who famously refused to run in the final of the 200 metres in the 1924 Olympics in Paris - because it was being held on the Sabbath Day.

So he switched to the 400 metres which he won - allegedly with the help of the Supreme Being.

If BBC Scotland are to be believed - Eric Liddell said after his victory that - 'he ran the first 200 metres as fast as he could, then he ran the second 200 metres even faster - with God's help'.

God save us - is all I can say.

Because it is a dangerous belief system that is being propagated here - that God favours some believers over others.

I wonder how he decides who to back in the regular Old Firm football games - I'm sure that Celtic and Rangers fans would be delighted to hear?

So too would the non-believers - and those with a fondness for trips to the bookies.

Because I imagine that having God on you side - is worth much morre than a half-time pep talk and half an orange.

But there's worse in store - what happens at international events when Christians come up against Muslims, Hindus and Jews for example - whose side does God take?

Because if God is always rooting for one side or the other - or one athlete over another - then that is just as daft as it sounds - and if true then all non-believers would never win anything - not even an egg and spoon race.

So I want my money back from BBC Scotland today - my share of the annual licence fee - for  broadcasting such drivel and nonsense.

Now this might be a tiny, insignificant amount of money in the scheme of things - but you never know.

With compound interest - and God's help on where to invest - it might turn into a huge fortune one day.
