Throwing in the Towel
According to recent media reports Tom Harris MP - one of the challengers to become the next leader of the Scottish Labour party - has thrown in the towel.
Apparently Tom has concluded that this is now a two-horse race between the two Scottish MSPs - Johann Lamont and Ken Macintosh.
Now to me this is a very sad state of affairs.
Because Tom Harris has at least been willing to speak out and challenge the vested interests - that all too often dominate Labour in Scotland.
Harris also appears to have a sense of humour - and a sense of the ridiculous - which would be a welcome change from the stern po-face that often accompanies Scottish Labour politics.
In any event, the party seems to be over as Tom Harris told one of the Sunday newspapers:
“My message has been that Labour is in really deep trouble and that we need to think outside the box. There is no indication that the party is prepared to do that yet and I don’t know why.”
The bookies favourite to win the crown is Johann Lamont - who has won the most backing from Scotland's trade union bosses - or Subs for short.
Yet Scotland is a country where - as I never get bored of telling people - most union members support SNP these days - so why are trade unions potentially deciding who should be Labour leader?
If the elephant in the room isn't a telling clue as to what's wrong with Scottish Labour - then I have to admit I don't know what is.
