Labour's Closed Shop
Has anyone else noticed or is it just me?
Seems to me that the Labour party is operating a good old fashioned 'closed shop' these days - when it comes to electing its Scottish leader.
Because Jack McConnell (the last but one leader) was a teacher - Iain Gray (the outgoing leader) was a teacher - and the latest incumbent Johann Lamont was also a teacher - before being elected to the Scottish Parliament in 1999.
Spooky or what?
Now this might encourage the cynical amongst you to speculate on an old maxim.
'Those who can do - while those that can't teach'.
But I think that's unfair - because I know lots of good teachers - some of them have even done something with their lives - before or after embarking on their teaching careers.
Although I still find it intriguing that the Scottish Labour leader - three times in a row - is or at least was a member of the teaching profession.
I wonder what odds the bookies would give you on that?
More to the point what does it say about the Labour party - in modern day Scotland?
Now that would be an interesting research for someone to take on - in the New Year.
