Joanna Cherry makes a fair point - the SNP's leadership election is about more than just one bill, in the same way a general election can't be used used as a 'de facto' referendum on independence.

But there's no doubt that the SNP's self-ID and gender recognition policies have been badly misjudged - and  have failed to win the support of the wider public.

And continuing to ignore Scottish public opinion will have consequences.
