Covid-19, Groundhog Day and Scottish Greens

I caught part of the BBC Politics Scotland programme yesterday which included an interview with Patrick Harvie, co-leader of the Scottish Greens.

The discussion focused on the big rise in new Covid cases in recent weeks and the prospect of Glasgow, and 11 other council areas, facing even more severe lockdown restrictions in the days ahead.

But Patrick had nothing of substance to say beyond empty platitudes and the need for everyone to 'pull together' -  without a critical thought or insight into how millions of people have managed to arrive back in the Covid equivalent of Groundhog Day again.

Who knows whether Scotland's schools are the weak link in the Covid safety chain, possibly the hospitality sector (unlikely as this is largely shut down already) or private households breaking the 'no indoor socialising' rules - and what of the role played by students returning to universities and halls of residence?

Which made me ask myself, "What is the point of the Scottish Greens?" - apart from acting as a handy prop for the Scottish Government.
