Tax Avoidance

Sections of the press have been having great fun at Labour's expense with news that the Party launched an online fund-raising appeal, accompanied by a photo of Ed Miliband, telling potential supporters:

"Election day is sooner than you think. Can we count on your support?"

The level of donation suggested is anywhere between £5 and £500 or more for those not suffering from the 'cost of living' crisis, but embarrassingly for Labour the web site is being run by Amazon Web Services.

Embarrassing because last year Amazon paid only £4 million in corporation tax in the UK by sending the vast bulk of its £11 billion of UK sales through a Luxembourg a tax haven.

And the fact that the Labour paid only £14,000 tax on an income of £33 million last year, by using perfectly legitimate tax avoidance measures, doesn't put the Party in a strong position to lecture others about their tax affairs.

A case of people in glass houses throwing stones, if you like.
