Killer Reforms

Labour is now only two weeks away from an announcement that the party has elected Jeremy Corbyn, a hitherto ineffectual London MP, as its next leader; a decision which I compared in a previous post to appointing the school janitor as its head teacher.

So we shall soon see whether Ed Miliband's party reforms are 'killing Labour', as Daniel Charleston Downes argues in this piece for the Labour Uncut web site.

Meanwhile over at The Guardian one of Ed Miliband's senior advisers, Tom Baldwin, argues that Team Miliband shouldn't be blamed for the chaos of Labour's leadership contest because the party was in desperate need of electoral reform.

Now I agree with that statement, broadly speaking.

But why ignore the obvious solution of having One Member One Vote (OMOV) for all party members instead of introducing a silly gimmick which allows every Tom, Dick and Harry to sign up solely for the purpose of voting in Labour's leadership contest.

Especially when all this has achieved is to strengthen the already unrepresentative influence of Britain's union bosses (the Bubs) who throw huge resources at their favoured candidate and effectively decide who should become leader, as they did in 2010 when Ed Miliband was elected on the back of union votes.
