Strikingly Unfair
A kind reader from South Lanarkshire has sent me the following letter - which appears in the latest edition of her local paper apparently - the Hamilton Advertiser.
"Hi
I would just like to say that I find it quite frustrating at how quickly the unions have acted to organise Industrial Action for November 30, to protest against the changes to pensions.
They want everyone to unite and support this action including the 2000 people in South Lanarkshire Council who have had no help from the unions over the years in the equal pay claims.
A lot of these people are union members but some can not even afford to be in the pension scheme yet they are expected to support every one else who will be affected by these changes.
I wonder how many of these union members would give up a days wages to support the people who have who have equal pay claims against the council?
A Council Employee"
What a good letter!
Next week's strike is not about protecting the interests of the low paid - quite the opposite.
What's happening instead - is that low paid union members are being asked to strike to defend the principle of 'final salary' pension schemes.
Which do nothing for the low paid - while delivering huge pension benefits to senior council officials - tax free lump sums and annual pensions (with added years) - which are beyond the dreams of low paid council workers.
No wonder most union members haven't voted to support the strike.
