Rules are made to be broken

The Telegraph reported the other day on the strange case of a doctor being paid £500,000 - despite not working for six years.

Sisiresh Chakrabarty, a consultant cardiologist, has been on the payroll of the Ipswich Hospital since being suspended over claims of incompetence in 2005.

The doctor's exact salary is unkown, but apparently the relevant scale is known - and apparently the suspended consultant has been paid - between £415,980 and £560,823 over the past six years.

For doing nothing it would seem.

A spokesperson for the hospital told the newspaper:

"It is in the public domain that this doctor has some restrictions placed on his practice and we continue our dialogue with him, his representatives and others, following all national guidelines."

Well that's OK then - we can all sleep that bit more soundly in our beds - because the NHS rules and national guidelines are being observed.

Now what someone should really be asking is - what kind of crazy system are we running when someone can be suspended on full pay for six years?

Because it's the equivalent of pouring around £500,000 of public money - straight down the drain.
