What's In A Square?


Around the world the communal spaces in big cities where citizens come together  now and then - for all kinds of reasons - earth shaking events of various kinds have been taking place.

From Tahrir Square in Egypt to Taksim Square in Turkey - for example - or going back to  Tiananmen Square in China where a student-led, pro-democracy rebellion was brutally crushed by the Red Army in 1989.

But what do we get in Glasgow's George Square?

An embarrassing attempt to stich-up a competition intended to bring about a much needed revival of the city centre's focal point - which has damaged Glasgow's reputation and cost the public purse many tens of thousands of pounds.

Bring back Brad Pitt and World War Z is all I can say - because Glasgow and George Square were so much more fun when Holywood was in town.

So much better than the real thing - with all these dreary 'toon cooncillor' types in charge.
