Fighting Fascism

I was surprised to read that 58 people were arrested at a protest against the British National Party (BNP) in London last weekend - but the irony is that those lifted by the police were all from Unite Against Fascism (UAF).

Which gace the BNP a great propaganda victory of course - because they were able to portray themselves as the law abiding victims of an angry mob - many of whom were so out of control that they had to be arrested by the Police.

Now I don't have any time for the BNP - or the English Defence League or the Scottish Defence League for that matter - but the UAF's tactics seemed to be particularly stupid, if you ask me.

Confronting the BNP by behaving like a hooligan yourself is a rather contradictory way to behave - and hardly seems likely to help people see the BNP for what they really are or to rally round the banner of the UAF.

I don't know much about the UAF, but I think it would also help their cause if they just as keen to protest against the religious fascists - who distort the message of Islam and who are such a blight on society today.

As the murderers of Drummer Lee Rigby showed - the BNP are not the only fascists - whose views need to be vigorously opposed and challenged.

But the UAF is nowhere to be seen when these vile individuals take to the streets - with the message of intolerance and hate.
