Hitting the Wrong Note

John Redwood, the Conservative MP for Wokingham, shared his thoughts with the nation the other day about what would happen, if voters cast their votes the 'wrong' way in the great European referendum.

"Both the Conservative and Labour parties need to recognise that once the referendum is out of the way it will have solved little if the vote is to remain. There will still be plenty of unhappy people."

In other words, democracy's a great thing unless it delivers  the wrong result in which case people like John reserve the right to bang on about it for years.

Yet if the vote were to go 51% to 49% in their favour, Mr Redwood and his chums would of course be saying that voters had made a wise an incontrovertible decision.

Still, JR does help illustrate the difference between a referendum and a 'neverendum'.
