Lasting Legacy

People pose with a candle in memory of late South African former president Nelson Mandela outside his home in Johannesburg
Jacob Zuma finally hit the nail on his head when he used three words to describe what his country and the rest of the world will miss about Nelson Mandela - his laughter, love and leadership.

Now I can't think of those three words being used to describe any other political figure or world leader in recent memory, not least because they tend to take themselves far too seriously, are inclined to suffer from giant egos - and would prefer to be remembered for specific achievements or their heroic role in momentous events.

In my view the lasting legacy of Nelson Mandela is that South Africa is a secular democracy - a country with many challenges, but one where its people both men and women are treated on an equal basis and where people of all religious beliefs, or no religion at all, are able to live together peacefully.

South Africa's peaceful transition from an apartheid state to an modern, power-sharing democracy where the rights of minorities are respected - is Nelson Mandela's lasting legacy.

For that we should all be truly grateful and optimistic for the future - a message which is embodied in this famous Anti-Apartheid song 'Gimme Hope Joanna' by Eddy Grant.
