Cowardly Liar

Metropolitan Police undated handout photo of Darrell Desuze who killed pensioner Richard Mannington Bowes during the London riots

The full ugly story surrounding the killing of London pensioner - Richard Bowes - took all day yesterday to emerge.

No sooner had I said in the blog site that the identity of his 17-year-old killer should be revealed - than the name of Darell Desuze started to appear on news bulletins - along with shocking CCTV images showing his cowardly and violent behaviour.

This powerfully built young man caught Richard Bowes with a 'sucker punch' to his jaw - in a completely unprovoked and unexpected attack - which caused his to drop like a stone and strike his unprotected head on the pavement.

Richard Bowes died in hospital a few days later - from serious head injuries sustained in the attack - meanwhile Darell Desuze carried on rioting and looting - and left his badly injured victim lying on the ground.

The emergency services were delayed in getting to Richard Bowes - because of all the riotous behaviour in Ealing that night - and were themselves attacked as they tried to get the pensioner to safety.

Now I thought initially that Darrell Desuze would stand trial for murder - but apparently not - which seems ridiculous to me in the circumstances.

How could this young man - or a lawyer acting on his behalf - argue that his actions were not so completely reckless and dangerous that he was aware - or ought to have been aware - of the consequences of his violent attack?

But the authorities have settled for a guilty plea to the lesser charge of manslaughter - thoiugh even that had to be dragged out of young Darrell Desuze - who tried initially to argue that he was only defending himself - until overwhelming CCTV evidence proved otherwise.

What a despicable coward and liar.

At first too young to be named as the accused, but streetwise enough to concoct a ludicrous defence which might have carried some weight - if not for the evidence of CCTV.

I hope he gets the maximum sentence allowed under the law - but even that is unlikely to do justice to his crime - because there is a further allegation against his mother - Lavinia Desuze (31) who is accused of helping her son to escape justice by destroying the clothes he wore on the night.

The charming Lavinia goes on trial next week.
