Sugar Daddy

Unite members will be interested to learn that since the 2010 general election - their union has donated a whopping £5 million of members' money - to the Labour party.

I'm not able to say what this was spent on - or whether it represents good value for money - because these matters are shrouded in secrecy.

As are the reasons for donating the money to Labour coffers - in the first place.

The point is that unless you are heavily involved in the union's affairs - preferably within its high command - then what is done in the name of the Unite political fund - is really not the  business of ordinary union members.

Sadly.

So it seems to me that it's not just what goes on in company boardrooms - up and down the country - that should be subject to greater openness and transparency.

Because big trade unions like Unite - could do with some daylight being shone on their own affairs too.
