Performance Reviews
A number of readers from South Lanarkshire have been in touch.
Apparently the council is going to great pains to get people to sign off on their Performance Development Reviews (PDRs) - a supposedly annual event based on a private discussion between individual employees and their managers.
But according to our readers - some employees are being asked to sign off on a PDR for a previous year - and even to sign off their PDR on a group basis.
Now that strikes me as very odd indeed.
Because the whole point of a performance review - is for managers to have a planned, individual discussion with individual employees.
Doing so on a collective basis makes no sense - in fact it undermines the whole purpose of a proper performance review.
Nor does it make sense to backdate the process - because who knows exactly what was said and agreed at the time - that's the whole point of keeping proper records.
So I would definitely ask for a proper explanation - more details of what's going on and why - that seems very reasonable in the circumstances.
But if people are not comfortable about what they are being asked to sign up to - then they shouldn't do so - and should seek further advice.
