Football Crazy

Strathclyde Police are right to highlight the enormous social cost that occurs - in the wake of Old Firm football matches.

In the aftermath of last night's disgraceful behaviour - on and off the pitch at Parkhead - the police reported 34 arrests - many of them drink fuelled and for sectarian offences.

After the last Old Firm contest - which was played during the day and not at night - the police made an incredible 229 arrests - filling every available police cell in central Scotland, apparently.

But that's only scratching the surface of the problem.

Because the police also report a huge increase in domestic violence - as some of the crazed 'fans' take their hateful, violent behaviour off the streets and into their homes - where other innocent victims await.

The two clubs are aware of these problems - and the link between bad behaviour during the 'game' - and events that follow once the match is over.

So let's hope that in the wake of last night's PR disaster - that the clubs and the police get together to discuss what can be done - because it paints a terrible picture of Glasgow.
