Swinney's Programme - A Drop In The Ocean

John Swinney hailed the promise of an extra 100,000 GP appointments over the next 12 months as the big ticket item in his new 'programme for government'.

But it turns out this figure is a 'drop in the ocean' given there are 650,000 appointments every week or well over 30 million visits a year - according to the chair of BMA Scotland's GP committee, Dr Iain Morrison.

Shortly after Mr Swinney finished his speech Public Health Scotland announced that direct GP consultations done either face-to-face or via phone had fallen by 500,000 in the past 12 months.
