Union Democracy Isn't Working - For Women!

I know loads of grassroots union members - home carers, residential care staff, classroom assistants, clerical, catering and cleaning staff - mostly women workers who were the backbone of the fight for equal pay in Scotland's councils.

But I don't know a single one who supports this nonsense about self-ID and the notion that men can magically declare they are women.

So either I'm out of touch or the trade unions' backing for all this transgender baloney is based on what the activists think - not the wider membership whose views don't count or are far less important.

In practice, union policy is made by activists who attend union committees or union conferences, but these activists are meant to broadly reflect the views of the members they represent, hence the name - 'representative democracy'.

The upshot is that representative democracy has failed to defend women's rights at the workplace - the interests of largely male trans activists have been given more weight that the rights of women members.

The ongoing cases involving Sandie Peggie vs Fife NHS and the Darlington Nurses being textbook examples of trade unions not protecting members with 'gender critical' views - treating them less favourably for disagreeing with union policy.

Now this is dangerous territory for trade unions who may be sued by their own members if they continue to behave  this way, because the Supreme Court has clarified that biological sex is the foundation stone of UK equality law and that self-ID is stone dead.
