The public finances are in a dreadful mess as Scottish ministers grapple with a huge budget deficit caused by the SNP's tax and spending decisions over the past 17 years.

John Swinney has been in government for virtually all this time - first as Finance Secretary and now as First Minister.

Jim Sillars is spot on about the dreadful personality cult which allowed Peter Murrell and Nicola Sturgeon to run the SNP as a 'Mr & Mrs' tag team for years. What's astonishing is that SNP members - party activists, councillors, MSPs and MPs - turned a blind eye to things for so long  which helps explain why the SNP is in such a terrible mess today.
