Women in Iran

Despite the election of a new, allegedly 'reformist' President - President Rouhani - the ugly face of Iranian politics still seems as strong as ever.

Just the other week another newly elected politician, a young woman - Ninan Siahkali Moradi (27) - was stripped of her post by the religious 'mullahs' who have been running the country for years.

Apparently Nina was too young and attractive to take up her post - and so the all-male council which oversees such matters simply set aside the election in Ninan's part of Iran - because her presence in the local parliament would have 'upset' her male colleagues.

Now you can't really compare this situation with what's going on in Egypt - since no one died and there are not thousands of people involved in what amounts to blatant victimisation and interference in a supposedly democratic election.

But it does tell you an awful lot about the position of women in Iran - and in other fundamentalist Islamic countries.
