Spending Public Money
Channel 4 News ran an interesting story the other night - about wasteful spending in local councils across the UK.
One of the points highlighted in the programme were the cost of council severance packages - which apparently cost an average of £27,000.
Now £27,000 is not a king's ransom, but what the average figures obscure - are the incredibly and arguably over generous cost of severance packages for the most senior council officials.
The cost of an enhanced severance package for a council chief executive or another senior officer - can run to hundreds of thousands of pounds - and all of the money is paid out of public funds.
Low paid workers rarely benefit from these enhanced severance arrangements - compared to senior council officials - cleaners, cooks, carers and classroom assistants are all second class citizens.
So well done Channel 4 News - for shining a light on a practice that has been going on unchecked for years - and that is a complete abuse of public funds.
