SNP Excuses Won't Wash
John Swinney rang the alarm in a letter to Chancellor Nadhim Zahawihttps://t.co/2L4MgQhBIp— The Herald (@heraldscotland) August 1, 2022
SNP Ministers are imposing huge cuts in council budgets compared to other areas of public spending in Scotland.
SNP Ministers have funded big pay rises for council leaders in recent years (5.2% and 4.2%) and just weeks ago agreed to fund a 5% plus pay rise for ScotRail train drivers.
But all of a sudden Scottish ministers say the 'cupboard is bare' and that they can't afford to fund a similar pay rise for Scotland's council workers.
Well, maybe ministers should make different and better spending choices (eg why does ScotGov 'need' 55 spin doctors) or decide to use the Scottish Parliament's tax raising powers?
In any event council workers who kept essential services going through Covid deserve a decent pay increase - just like council leaders whose pay has increased by 9.4% since 2021.
