Glasgow, Humza and Drug Deaths

Glasgow Times

Humza Yousaf lives in Broughty Ferry these days, on the outskirts of Dundee, but the next time the MSP for Glasgow Pollok visits Glasgow he should have a serious discussion about drug deaths.

Because whatever the SNP is doing it's not working and hasn't been for years.

Even Nicola Sturgeon was forced to admit the SNP "took out eye off the ball" when Scotland racked up the worst drug deaths rate in Europe in 2021.

In 2023 there were 303 suspected drug deaths in Greater Glasgow - a rise of 41% from the figure for the year before when it was 214.

Glasgow's figures are far higher than the rest of Scotland - campaigners say a change is needed to focus on recovery rather than treating addiction.

Annemarie Ward, from Favor UK, which advocates for people in recovery said the figures were “devastating” - she said if the Scottish Government “keep listening to addiction ‘experts’ they will get more addiction”.

So maybe it's time to start listening to the advocates of recovery - because the addiction 'experts' are getting nowhere fast.
