Politics, Covid and Bogus Comparisons
A ridiculous row broke out on social media the other day about the relative number of Covid cases in Scotland compared to England.
The ONS (Office for National Statistics) said Scotland and England were on a par with both having Covid rates of 1 in 20 per head of population.
But the SNP delved into the small print of the statistics and claimed 'victory' by pointing out that the unrounded figures showed Scotland's cases to be slightly lower.
Nicola Sturgeon even went as far as to proclaim these figures as evidence of how well Scottish Ministers are doing.
Yet Scottish Ministers seemed completely uninterested in the fact that Wales did better than everyone else!
Because as far as comparative health statistics are concerned the figures from Wales are the ones to focus upon - unless you're making a completely bogus political point, of course.
