When Irish Eyes Are Smiling

The good news on the footballing front keeps on coming with the Republic of Ireland the latest team to upset the odds by beating Italy to join Wales, England and Northern Ireland in the knockout phase of the 2016 Euro finals.

All four 'home' nations getting through to the last 16 is a great achievement, unprecedented in my lifetime, and all of them have played well rather than scraped over the finishing line.

Something has to give next week given that Wales play Northern Ireland for a place in the last 8, while Martin O'Neill's men take on one of the big favourites in the host nation France.

England have the easiest tie on paper, but are up against one of the real surprises of the tournament in Iceland so things are set fair for another feast of football next week.
