The crazy gang in the great EU referendum are right-wing rather than left-wing ultras, but their purpose and tactics are just the same, as this report from the Politics Home web site demonstrates all too well.

From now until polling day on 23 June the Remain side needs to hammer home the message about just how dangerous these people are to the UK economy.

Because ultimately that is what stopped the 'ultras' in Greece from taking their country over the edge.

Leave.EU attacked over tweet depicting Angela Merkel as Hitler

Andy Wigmore, the Brexit group’s head of communications, posted a mock-up movie picture of The Great Escape featuring Nigel Farage, Boris Johnson and Michael Gove as prisoners of war and Ms Merkel with the Nazi dictator’s famous moustache.

In a statement put out by pro-Remain group Britain Stronger In Europe, Labour MP Mary Creagh challenged Vote Leave, a separate Brexit campaign which has the support of Mr Johnson, Mr Gove and other leading Conservatives, to distance themselves from the tweet.

“It is sickening for Nigel Farage’s Leave campaign to compare a democratic, compassionate world leader like Angela Merkel to Hitler,” Ms Creagh said.

“And it demeans the bravery and sacrifice of the hundreds of thousands of British men and women who gave their lives to defeat fascism.

“Coming just a day after their attempt to twist the Orlando attacks to their own political campaign, it is clear that the leave campaign is in the gutter.

“Leave.EU should delete this tweet and issue a full apology as soon as possible.

“Vote Leave too have questions to answer. Will Boris Johnson, Michael Gove, Gisela Stuart, Michael Howard and Liam Fox condemn this despicable piece of propaganda?

“If they do not, it will be clear that their campaign is just one long, Ukip-style dog whistle”.

The controversy comes two days after Leave.EU was heavily criticised for sending out a tweet – that was later deleted – that warned that Britain would be more vulnerable to an “Orlando-style atrocity” by remaining in the EU.
