Captain Chaos
John Rentoul, writing in The Independent on Sunday, reflected on a disastrous first week the new leader of the Labour Party, Jeremy Corbyn, and on a new opinion poll which shows the Conservatives extending their lead over Labour since the general election in May.

Now I didn't vote in the Labour leadership election although I understand that Corbyn's great appeal to an influx of new Labour supporters lay in his claim to be different, as a politician of real substance with an innate dislike of spin.
Yet only days into office Jeremy and his colleagues have been flip-flopping all over the place, spinning desperately to get themselves out of terrible trouble, for example over their desire (expressed by his ally John McDonnell) to honour the 'bravery' of the IRA.
So whether it's Jezza's image and appearance, his willingness to sing God Save the Queen, the UK's membership of Nato and the European Union - the new Labour leader seems to be standing his long-held political principles on their head.
