Glasgow - Strike News

Glasgow City Council has issued the following letter to Parents and Carers in connection with the strike action which is planned for 23 and 24 October.

Dear Parent/Carer

Strike Action Announcement by Unison and GMB

UNISON and GMB has informed the council of their intention to take strike action on Tuesday 23 October and Wednesday 24 October.

I'm sorry to inform you that as a direct result of this action your child's school will be closed on both dates.

Please accept my apologies as I'm sure the situation is very inconvenient for families and be assured that Glasgow City Council continues to explore all options with UNISON and GMB to bring this dispute to a resolution as soon as possible.

Yours sincerely

MAUREEN McKENNA
Executive Director of Education

The thing that jumped out to me straight away is that the Council is keen to apologise to Glasgow families for the inconvenience caused by the strike, but has not offered one official word of apology to thousands of claimants who have been fighting for their rights to equal pay for the past 12 years.

The other key point is that if the Council were as keen to sit down and address the underlying cause of the strike - the absence of serious settlement negotiations after 10 months and 21 separate meetings - there would be no need for a strike in the first place.
