Glasgow - 'Divide and Rule' Won't Work

Glasgow City Council (GCC) issued the following statement in response to the GMB and Unison serving notice of strike action to the Council on 23 and 24 October 2018.

"Unions agreed to the current timescale as part of the negotiations which have been ongoing for several months - and it is simply wrong to move to strike action when they know that it will not and cannot achieve anything.

"The unions also fully understand that we cannot continue to negotiate an equal pay settlement with them while they are engaged in industrial action. However, the vast majority of the claimants are represented by Action 4 Equality Scotland and we will continue negotiations with them during this time."

Needless to say these 'divide and rule' tactics will not succeed because the Claimants' representatives (A4ES, GMB and Unison) agreed to a joint approach to their dealings with the City Council - and there can be no continued negotiations without all the parties at the table.

The Council now has a short window to get settlement discussions back on track, but the 'serious negotiations' that were promised months ago have never materialised despite 21 separate meetings with senior council officials.

If the Council is finally prepared to get serious and bring an end this long-running dispute, the GMB and Unison need to be at the negotiating table as well.
