Ireland, Scotland and The Fight Against Fascism

Lots of Irish people and folks of Irish descent served in the First and Second World Wars - despite the government of the Irish Republic remaining officially 'neutral' while most of the rest of Europe battled Adolf Hitler and fascism.

My grandfather, Patrick Fitzgibbon, served in World War I and his two sons (my uncles Edmund and Pat) both saw active service in the fight against Nazi Germany during World War II.

All three came back alive and physically uninjured, unlike many of their friends.

Once a year we remember people like Patrick, Edmund and Pat - and for good reason because without them the world would be a very different place.

The Fight Against Fascism (November 11, 2024)

Here's a photo of my Uncle Edmund during the Second World War and one of my Uncle Pat - two brothers from the same family who were involved in the fight against Hitler and fascism.

Edmund served in the Highland Light Infantry while Pat had a role in battle communications.
I remember Edmund and Pat with great fondness - they would both have laughed at being held up as 'heroes', yet the truth is that without people like Edmund and Pat the world we live in now would be a very different place.
