So Long And Thanks For All The 'Pish'

Alex Massie on the chaos caused in the SNP by the manner and timing of Nicola Sturgeon's sudden resignation as First Minister.

"It did not have to be like this. The problem is not so much a lack of succession planning but the lurch into an unplanned leadership contest. If Sturgeon had announced she would leave Bute House at the end of this parliamentary session, an orderly contest might have been possible.

"True, she would have been a lame duck first minister but so be it. Better that than this. A more orderly process in which candidates, and the party more generally, had time to really think might have produced a happier outcome.

"Seen in that light, Sturgeon’s resignation begins to seem an act of selfishness, not service. Nor does it help that she is departing on a wave of delusion. She says there was “no intent” to mislead the press (and the public) about the present number of SNP members but lying about this on multiple occasions to journalists from multiple outlets cannot have been an accident."
