Islamists and Apologies
The Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) issued the following statement in response to the news that hate preacher Anjem Choudary was unanimously convicted of terrorism by an Old Bailey jury in July of this year:
“Mr Anjem Choudary has long been condemned by Muslim organisations and Muslims across the country, who consider him and his support for Daesh [Isis] to be despicable and contrary to the values of Islam and our nation.
“Many Muslims have long been puzzled why this man was regularly approached by the media to give outrageous statements that inflamed Islamophobia."
The theme of blaming the media for Choudary's emergence was quickly taken up, for example by the commentator Mehdi Hasan who called for the UK media to apologise to Muslims for allowing this vile little man to air his views.
Now as I said in my own Tweet to Mehdi Hasan, Anjem Choudary is not the product of the UK media - instead he is the product of Islamist elements within the Muslim community and it would be far better if everyone concentrated on exposing the likes of Choudary and his ilk.
As opposed to pointing the finger of blame elsewhere, as if the Muslim community is being victimised or treated unfairly by the media reporting on Islamist views.
